This bill will allow families to get the specific treatment approach their doctor recommends for their child. Currently, insurance companies insist on an outdated myth that there is only one approach to treatment that has research evidence! Parents seeking treatment that fits their child’s particular needs and their doctor’s recommendation are routine denied insurance coverage. Portantino’s SB 562 will fix this situation! Thank you for the tireless service of our equity-minded legislators! An identical 2019 bill by Portantino sailed through the Senate and Assembly, but was vetoed by Governor Newsom at the last possible moment. This year we are hoping for the Governor’s support of this access to treatment bill. Community News Portantino’s Bill to Improve Healthcare Access for Autism Spectrum Disorder Patients Approved by Senate Committee STAFF REPORT Published on Tuesday, April 6, 2021 | 4:44 pm 2 thoughts on “Portantino’s Bill to Improve Healthcare Access for Autism Spectrum Disorder Patients Approved by Senate Committee” Senate Bill 562, authored by Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Pasadena), passed the Senate Human Services Committee Tuesday. The measure will eliminate barriers to help patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) access Behavioral Health Treatment (BHT) in California.“SB 562 will increase healthcare access to many autistic patients in California,” Portantino said in a prepared statement.“Statistics tell us that 1 in 59 children born today are diagnosed with autism. Early intervention is the key to helping these children live up to their potential and health insurance coverage for behavioral health treatment is critical. Research has proven that children with autism greatly benefit from behavioral health treatments and show remarkable progress,” Portantino statement read. “By expanding the types of qualified state certified coverage, this bill will allow children to receive the treatment their physician has prescribed in a timely manner.”Current law requires that health insurance companies cover all physicians or psychologists prescribed medically necessary, evidence-based BHT for ASD. Due to a loophole in the law, patients with ASD are being denied coverage for physician and psychologist prescribed evidence-based BHT. In some cases, coverage is only being offered for one form of BHT.Additionally, a shortage of network providers has created a six to twelve month wait list for BHT services.SB 562 will eliminate the existing statutory obstacles and require health insurance coverage for all forms of medically necessary, evidence-based BHT for Californians with ASD without diminishing consumer protections. The measure expands the number of qualified professionals by authorizing already State certified professionals to administer BHT within their professional competence, thereby reducing or eliminating the waiting list for services.SB 562 also details the requirements for a Qualified Autism Service Paraprofessional to insure health insurance coverage, including background checks to protect California children. The measure will protect the interests of California consumers and the state by closing the loopholes in the law and ensuring that every Californian is covered.“The DIR/Floortime Coalition of California wants to thank Senator Portantino for his ongoing leadership and support on behalf of California families,” said Andrea Davis, President of the DIR/Floortime Coalition. “Senate Bill 562 will help Californians with autism receive the treatment prescribed by their physician treatment that they both need and deserve. For too long Californians on the autism spectrum have only been covered for one type of behavioral health treatment. This legislation will correct that and allow Californians to receive the physician-prescribed, medically necessary, evidence-based treatment approach selected specifically for them. Not all Californians with autism are alike. They deserve a treatment approach chosen for their specific circumstances and needs. Treatments chosen specifically for the client will allow them to achieve their full potential and lower costs for the state, for the insurance company, and for the family. We are happy to support this much needed legislation.”SB 562 is sponsored by the DIR/Floortime Coalition of California. Supporters of the bill include: Center for Developmental Play and Learning, Cherry Crisp Entertainment and Productions, Child Development Institute, Dr. Barbara Stroud, Clinical Psychologist, Fresno City College, Greenhouse Therapy Center, Holding Hands Pediatric Therapy and Adult Services, NeuroRelational Framework Institute, Positive Development, Professional Child Development Associates, Stanford University Schwab Learning Center, the Washington Elks Therapy Programs for Children, INC., and Touchstone Family Development Center. Thrilled families will have more choices that honor individual differences! So proud of Dr. Andrea Davis at Greenhouse Therapy and all the other supporters of this bill to advocate for families. Family inside home when man allegedly set it on fire willing to testify in his defense

first_imgWABC(OCEAN TOWNSHIP, N.J.) — Paul Caneiro, the man accused of setting a fire at his New Jersey mansion last week, will next appear in court on Wednesday, but his family is already stepping up to defend him in a mysterious case that may include the quadruple murder of Caneiro’s brother’s family.Caneiro, 51, allegedly used gasoline to ignite a blaze at his Ocean Township home on Tilton Avenue around 5 a.m. on Oct. 20 while his wife and two daughters were inside, according to an arrest warrant obtained by ABC News. But Caneiro’s lawyer, Robert Honecker, told ABC News on Saturday that his wife, Susan, and daughters, Marissa and Katelyn, “fully support him and would be willing to testify at his hearing on Wednesday.” All three escaped the fire unharmed. A decision on if they testify will be made early this week.On the same day as Caneiro’s home in Ocean Township burned, his brother’s mansion in nearby Colts Neck, New Jersey, also burst into flames. Authorities responding to the fire found the bodies of Keith Caneiro, Paul’s brother and business partner, and his wife, Jennifer, and their two young children. Keith Canero had been shot, while the other three had been stabbed to death, according to police.Monmouth County prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni said at a news conference Wednesday that the family was “targeted” in the horrific crime.“The case has transcended into a multiple homicide investigation in addition to the arson matter. And to date, our investigation has revealed that unfortunately, sadly, each of these individuals were the victims of homicidal violence at some point prior to when the fire was set,” Gramiccioni said. Gramiccioni did not say whether Paul Caneiro is a suspect in the murder of his brother’s family, and he has only been charged with aggravated arson in connection to his own home.Honecker said Wednesday that Paul Caneiro will “assert his innocence for this charge as well as any other potential charges.”The fire at Keith Caneiro’s Colts Neck mansion broke out about seven hours after the fire in Ocean Township. The two towns are only about 10 miles apart. Keith Caneiro was the founder and chief executive officer of Square One, a technology services consulting firm in Asbury Park, New Jersey.Over $7,100 had been raised by a GoFundMe account for Paul Caneiro’s two daughters as of early Sunday.Honecker said the house in Ocean Township was cleared by authorities Saturday evening and the family has been allowed back in to collect their belongings, but it is inhabitable at this time. GMSA unveils R900m local investment

first_imgLater this year, the company will open its state of the art Pan African Parts Distribution Centre at the Coega Industrial Development Zone outside Port Elizabeth. The centre, an investment of R250-million, will replace the existing GMSA facility in Kempston Road. “This is indicative of our efforts to produce the best quality products in the industry which ultimately supports our competitiveness as a vehicle assembler in South Africa,” GMSA’s finance vice-president, Michael Sacke, said in a statement this week. Marginally higher sales ‘Quality products, customer satisfaction’ Confident that the worst is over for the local auto industry, General Motors South Africa is to invest around R900-million on upgrading and consolidating its production facilities in Port Elizabeth, and on launching 10 new products, over the next three years. He pointed out, however, that there was no doubt that consumers were still facing challenging economic upheaval with steep the rise in food and commodity prices. The new facility of 38 000 square metres will house all of the company’s aftersales operations under one roof, and aims to meet the needs of the growing parts and accessories business which has an annual revenue of in excess of R1-billion. Sacke said that like most original equipment manufacturers in South Africa, GMSA was an independent entity which had to fund its own investments. GMSA is forecasting that new vehicle sales in 2010 will be marginally higher than last year. SAinfo reporterWould you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? The Struandale plant was named the best local manufacturing plant for light commercial vehicles in the latest 2009 Synovate Quality Awards. According to GMSA sales and marketing vice-president Malcolm Gauld, the company is confident that the market will not further deteriorate this year. “We foresee a gradual improvement in sales and project that the 2010 market will come in at 412 000, about a 5% growth versus 2009’s 394 000,” said Gauld. 29 January 2010 “We are mindful that the pending increase in electricity prices can adversely affect cost of living which will curb consumer spending confidence,” he said. “It is important for us to continue improving our production facilities as this contributes to the quality of our products that we produce,” he said, adding that it was vital for GMSA to focus on quality products and excellent customer satisfaction which helps to maintain the current customer base and lure new ones.last_img read more
