THE country will be paying close attention to the city of Calabasas in upcoming months, watching how it enforces the toughest anti-smoking law in the nation. On Friday, a ban took effect on all smoking in public, as defined by anywhere indoor or out where people can see you. No one doubts that smoking is a health hazard. In California in particular, government has taken as much action as is appropriate to curb smoking habits. The Calabasas ban, however, crosses the line of appropriate action into the land of unreasonable coercion. And that’s even more hazardous to our society’s health.
