Share Pope Francis: “I would like all of us… to have the courage to walk in the presence of God”Pope Francis has warned the Catholic Church would become “a compassionate NGO” without spiritual renewal. In a Sistine Chapel Mass with cardinals on his first day as Church leader, the pontiff said: “If we do not confess to Christ, what would we be?“We would end up a compassionate NGO. What would happen would be like when children make sand castles and then it all falls down.”Francis is the first Latin American – and the first Jesuit – Pope. The BBC’s David Willey, in Rome, says the 76-year-old has already been swift to stamp his style on the papacy.Pope Francis is regarded as a doctrinal conservative, but he is also seen as a potential force for reform of the Vatican bureaucracy, analysts say.Shunned special carOn Wednesday night, Pope Francis endeared himself to the crowds in St Peter’s Square – and underlined his reputation for humility – when he asked them to bless him before blessing them in return from the balcony of the basilica. The Vatican’s account of his first hours in the top job on Thursday also emphasised Pope Francis’s humility, describing how he shunned a special car and security detail provided to take him to the Vatican, travelling instead on a bus with the other cardinals.Following his first outing as pope to the Rome basilica on Thursday, Francis went back to the clergy house in a city centre side street where he had been staying ahead of the conclave that elected him on Wednesday.“He packed his bags and then he went to pay the bill for his room so as to set a good example,” said Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi. He also broke tradition by remaining standing to receive cardinals’ acts of homage after his election, instead of sitting in the papal throne, Father Lombardi said.On Friday, Pope Francis will meet all the cardinals, including those aged over 80 who did not take part in the conclave. On Saturday he will meet the world’s media at a special papal audience, an opportunity perhaps to set out some of his global vision, says the BBC’s James Robbins in Rome.A visit to his predecessor Benedict XVI at his retreat at Castel Gandolfo outside Rome is also planned, but will not take place in the next couple of days, Father Lombardi said. The visit to Benedict is important, correspondents say, as the existence of a living retired pope has prompted fears of a possible rival power.Francis will be installed officially in an inauguration Mass on Tuesday 19 March, the Vatican added.BBC Newslast_img read more

Local musician keeps rocking despite all odds

first_imgAddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitterShare to MoreAddThisAlpena, Mich. — Many different types of artists call the Sunrise Side home. One of those is Rock ‘n’ Roll Musician David Rude. He’s been a musician his whole life, and he’s not letting any roadblocks get in his way. Rude has enjoyed playing guitar and rock ‘n’ roll since he was kid.“I’ve always been into music for as long as I can remember,” said Rude. “At the age of four or five, I would pick up a tennis racket, and the tennis racket was my guitar, and I would strum to it.”The Alpena native has been busy preparing a new horror-punk rock album with the help of local musicians. This will be his third album as a solo artist. He draws influence from old horror films to create his music. It’s a niche musical scene in the punk category of rock.  He’s already released three singles entitled “Lucky Stars,” “Black Lagoon,” and “Bride of the Reanimator.”Rude’s music has been heard all over the world. His sounds have traveled online and to different radio stations, including stations in New York. His wife, Colleen, helps master all of his tracks and is one of his biggest supporters.“Learning it and being able to put it forth and show something that I’ve done is really, really inspiring for me and probably my children,” said Colleen Rude. Many people do not know that David has been living with two autoimmune conditions for 20 years. Rude has been on disability which has given him time to pursue his passion in music. The United States Army Veteran has had to undergo surgeries and infusions due to his health problems, but that hasn’t dampened his spirits.“I’d like to look at life in a more positive way,” said David Rude. “I’d say “yeah, I’m sick, but whatever, that doesn’t define me,” I can rise above that and just make the best of what I’ve got with the cards that I’ve been dealt.”David has just enough fuel to continue to perfect his craft and do what he loves.“I just start writing songs, get up in the morning, pour coffee, start working on a song, and that’s it,” said Rude. “I don’t take my gifts to my grave, and every year, I’ve got to write these songs and put out these CDs, and it’s a beautiful thing.”Rude also plays in a few local bands around town. You can catch him and the North Country Burnouts at the Black Sheep on Saturday night. Catch his new album towards the end of February. Nigeria 0-1 Uganda: Miya Faruku ruins Enyeama’s centenary celebrations

first_imgIt was meant to be a party for the Super Eagles as they faced the Cranes of Uganda in Uyo on Wednesday but it turned out differently as they lost the match which was meant to be a preparatory session for their upcoming AFCON qualifiers and also the celebration of the 100th cap for Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama. The Ugandans won the match 1-0 through an 81st minute goal by Miya Faruku. The Super Eagles surely needed a victory to win back the trust of their fans, having failed to qualify for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations. Instead, they earned more distrust as the fans began to cheer the Ugandans after the goal was scored. The only aspect of the game plan that followed the scripts was the team captain Enyeama getting his 100th cap at his home state, Akwa Ibom. The Lille goalkeeper thanked the fans for their support. He said, “This is a milestone and I am glad to have achieved this. I thank God for making it possible. I also say thank you to the fans who have supported me all the way.”He added that the result would not dampen his feelings. “It is a disappointment to have lost the game but then that’s football. It is a training game for both sides and you may have seen how the team was assembled. This is football for you.”Nigeria Football Federation president, Amaju Pinnick, confirmed that the football body had approved the contract for Stephen Keshi as Eagles coach. He spoke on the pitch at half time of the game via SuperSport. He said, “The executive committee of the NFF met today (Wednesday) and approved the recommendation of the technical committee for Keshi to continue as the country’s coach. It is now just left for Keshi to sign.”The former Nigeria captain has been given a new two-year contract after his initial three-year deal lapsed when Nigeria lost at the World Cup in Brazil last year. The new deal will give him $25,000 every month with add-ons of $15,000 for accommodation and $2,500 for transportation. In his first stint with Nigeria which ran from November 2011 to July 2014, Keshi won the 2013 Africa Nations Cup in South Africa and led the team as far as the second round of the 2014 World Cup. His failure to qualify the country for the 2015 AFCON in Equatorial Guinea created a gulf between him and the NFF. He was initially asked to go but was later recalled. –last_img read more
