Landmark study signals shift in thinking about stem cell differentiation Since the 1960’s, physicists have been analyzing the theory of black holes and astronomers have been looking for examples in the universe.A black hole is a concentration of mass so enormous that it exhibits its own gravitational force. This force is so great, that nothing escapes from it. Researchers have found a method to find black holes and analyze their characteristics, such as their mass and gravitational force, to determine if they are in fact black holes.Astrophysicists first look for compact, massive, dark objects in the center of nearby galaxies. Then they use Newtonian physics and a series of equations to measure the mass and spin angle of the object. If the object is at least three times the mass of the sun, it is classified as a black hole. However, the mass of most objects found are 10 million times the mass of the sun.Current research focuses on finding yet more black holes and in particular, discovering if they contain event horizons. An event horizon is a one-way barrier that causes the isolation of the black hole’s interior from the outside universe. Matter, energy, information, and radiation, for example, can fall into the black hole, but nothing, not even light, can get out.For years, astronomers have been studying a huge, dark object in the center of the Milky Way Galaxy that affects the motion of the stars and gasses that are nearby.Infrared technology has been used to discover that there are stars orbiting this object. The mass of this object is 30 million times the mass of the sun. Most astrophysicists have accepted that this is a black hole in the center of the Milky Way Galaxy.Physicists and astronomers alike are working to find even more black holes in many different galaxies, and to find stronger evidence that they have event horizons. So it appears that the existence of black holes may not be such a mystery. However, the intrigue still remains at the thought of enormous black objects with masses at least 10 million times that of the sun.Could they be at the center of every galaxy?Reference:Narayan R. 2005. WebRTC puts video chats all in the browser Microsoft wants to iron out the wrinkles in the existing WebRTC 1.0 proposal with a new approach. Microsoft is suggesting a new CU-RTC-Web standard. The CU-RTC Web stands for Customizable, Ubiquitous Real Time Communication over the Web.”Ubiquitous” is a standout concern. The WebRTC 1.0 standard falls short in an absence of “ubiquitous deployability” and that is one of the direct criticisms from Microsoft. “The standard does not show signs of interoperability with existing VoIP phones, and mobile phones, from behind firewalls and across routers and instead focuses on video communication between web browsers under ideal conditions.”Microsoft is not comfortable with the fact that the standard builds on the legacy of SIP, which does not make for a stateless system. Applications would be forced “to resort to trial-and-error and/or browser-specific code,” Microsoft says. Instead, its proposed system would dispense with the constraints imposed by “unnecessary state machines and complex SDP and provides simple, transparent objects.”The WebRTC standard, meanwhile, has gathered some fans if not Microsoft, namely support of Mozilla, Opera, Ericsson, Cisco, and other companies. According to reports, Firefox, Opera and Chrome have implemented WebRTC on some level for plugin-free VoIP and webcam chats.Microsoft wants to reduce some requirements that it sees holding the technology back. Microsoft takes issue with what is an overly prescriptive standard, asking too much of the network transport logic to be implemented by the browser. What is more, according to the critics at Microsoft, Web developers do not have enough wiggle room if they are looking to customize how their real-time communication services respond to changes in network quality. According to Microsoft’s blog posting on Monday, signed by key names at Skype as well as Microsoft, “A successful standard cannot be tied to individual codecs, data formats or scenarios. They may soon be supplanted by newer versions, which would make such a tightly coupled standard obsolete just as quickly. The right approach is instead to support multiple media formats and to bring the bulk of the logic to the application layer, enabling developers to innovate.”Microsoft makes its case that its proposal empowers developers to create applications that can take advantage of the benefits offered by real-time media in a clear, straightforward way. Since Microsoft now has Skype under its wing, inevitable observations are that its move to offer a standard proposal of its own suggests some sort of business motive against competition. Those who have examined the proposal, however, conclude that the suggestions are useful and of benefit for a final outcome. The changes are more about making technical improvements than staging a political maneuver, commented one site; another report said it found the Microsoft proposals well-reasoned. © 2012 Phys.org Explore further (Phys.org) — Microsoft is telling the W3C WebRTC working group that it has a better idea than the WebRTC standard which is still in progress and under revision. The goal has been to come up with a Web standard that will enable real-time audio and video conferencing on the Web without requiring any plugins. Now, though, Microsoft has submitted its own proposal for real-time communication to the WebRTC working group. The WebRTC specification is undergoing revision through this W3C WebRTC working group. The warnings, which alert individuals to disturbing material, have been talked about, used and promoted on college campuses and elsewhere for more than a decade, but little was known about how well they work. Now, a pair of recent studies suggest that they may have little effect at all. For years, trigger warnings have been the subject of impassioned academic debate: Do they protect people from distress or encourage fragility? “Although people were distressed by the negative materials we showed them, they were no more or less distressed if they’d seen a trigger warning first,” said Mevagh Sanson of the University of Waikato in New Zealand, the lead author of one of the studies, published this month in Clinical Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science. The presence of different strains of grass pollen in the atmosphere can help predict when hay fever and asthma could strike, researchers have found. A team led by the University of Queensland (UQ) researchers, tracked grass pollen for seasonal variations and found it was released into the atmosphere later in areas further from the equator. “Using this method, we may be able to better predict when allergenic pollen is present and allow people affected by asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and rhinitis to more effectively manage their condition,” said Nicholas Osborne, Associate Professor at UQ’s School of Public Health. Also Read – Add new books to your shelf”(And) with the advent of personalised medicine, more and more people are becoming aware of which allergen is responsible for their allergy,” Osborne said. He said the research would help allergy sufferers prepare for the hay fever season and doctors to prescribe more personalised treatments. “People who fail to manage their asthma are at greater risk of asthma attack and being forced to visit hospital emergency departments,” Osborne said. “Having a more accurate forecast of when a patient is at risk will allow people to better manage their disease.” Scientists hope to expand on research to create a unique profile of each grass pollen species to determine the most harmful strains. “Eventually – possibly within three to four years – we hope this will allow us to produce a better forecast of when and where exposure to pollen occurs,” Osborne further added.
